Ultrafiltration water treatment system

Ultrafiltration (UF) is a pressure-driven membrane separation process. It uses a semi-permeable membrane with a pore size of 0.01 to 0.1 microns (typically rated by Molecular Weight Cut-Off from 1,000 to 500,000 Daltons).

  • What it Removes: It effectively separates particles based on molecular size. It removes suspended solids, colloids, bacteria (like E. coli), viruses, parasites (like Giardia and Cryptosporidium), and high-molecular-weight organic compounds.

A standard industrial UF system is modular and includes the following key components:

ComponentPrimary Function
Feed PumpProvides the necessary pressure to push water through the membranes.
Pre-filter (e.g., 100µm)Protects UF membranes from large debris and particulates.
UF Membrane ModulesThe core filtration units. Common formats: Hollow Fiber (most common, high surface area) or Spiral Wound.
Backwash/Cleaning SystemCritical for maintenance. Uses product water or air scour to periodically clean the membrane by reversing the flow.
Automated Control System (PLC)Controls the cyclic operation (Filtration → Backwash → Chemical Enhanced Backwash) and monitors key parameters (pressure, flow, turbidity).
Chemical Dosing SystemFor periodic cleaning (CIP – Clean-in-Place) with acids, alkalis, or oxidants to remove foulants.
